The Visual Arrival to Runways 28 and 10
Runway Length = 2752 meters and 61 m. wide
The normal circuit is LEFT HAND for R/W 28. RIGHT HAND for R/W 10. All at 1000ft QFE
When coming from the South or SW and already with approach, routing via Deal Pier will probably get you a join for 'left base for 28' or if 10 in use then a 'downwind 10 RH'.
From Whitstable a 'straight in' for 10 is not unknown.
Also from Whitstable for R/W 28 it is possible to be given 'downwind RH 28' join, particulaly if ATC don't want you to cross the extended centerline (outbound traffic) ie remain North.
From the Canterbury direction when 28 in use you will no doubt be invited to join 'downwind 28 LH' or if 10 in use then quite possibly 'right base 10 RH'.
Occasionally , for traffic spacing, everybody may be routed to 'downwind 10 RH'. And the same goes for runway 28, ie, 'downwind 28 LH'. Be aware that there is occasional IFR traffic using Manston in the shape of 747's, DC8's and the like these will have the priority. You may not be aware of their imminent presence because they will be talking to LONDON radar, until clear of controlled airspace (by descent), however Manston Atc will have prior knowledge and you may be invited to orbit somewhere in the circuit if a 'heavy' is on the ILS or about to be.
